A realisation

hilsThe reason the whole Clark/Lex ship makes me so sad is because I believed that if Clark had trusted Lex with his secret from the beginning that they wouldn't have ended up as enemies. Now, Smallville isn't exactly subtle in its subtext but this conversation between Lex and Ryan made me realise that even if Clark had trusted Lex from the beginning their friendship was always going to be doomed, no matter how much Lex is trying to be a good person at the moment
Ryan: That's the rarest issue there is.
Lex: That's because it's the one where Devilicus turned against Warrior Angel.
Ryan: Weren't they best friends?
Lex: Once upon a time.
Ryan: Well, what happened to them?
Lex: Well, they, uh, ruled the Guardian Realm together until Devilicus told Warrior Angel that they should join forces and conquer humanity. Together, no one would be able to stop them.
Ryan: What did Warrior Angel say?
Lex: He refused. He believed it was a hero's sacred duty to protect those weaker than himself. Devilicus thought he was naive and vowed to destroy him and everything he stood for.
Ryan: Why do you think Devilicus went bad?
Lex: I'm not sure. Probably wasn't aware of it. You see, Ryan, in life, the road to darkness is a journey, not a light switch.
Ryan: You should remember that, Lex.
I'm not sure if that makes it more or less despressing. LOL. Ah well, there will always be fic where is all turns out well for them :)
