Tonights viewing
Feb. 26th, 2006 11:14 pmI wandered downstairs earlier to watch one of my 3 Amazon Rental DVDs while BSG was downloading. Unfortunately I didn't actually realise how late it was so I only had 15 minute before Just The Two Of Us was on. Initally I was going to post about how the general public are clearly insane and are voting off all the good people who can actually sing whilst leaving on crap people because they are vaguely amusing. I was also going to pass comment about how
jacqui_hw is right and Chris clearly deserves to win. His performance tonight actually brought tears to my eyes it was that beautiful.
Anyway, that's not the point of this post. After Just The Two Of Us finished Gideon's Daughter was on. I'd seen a few adverts for it during the week and I was mildly curious, most because it had a good cast (Bill Nighy, Miranda Richardson and Robert Lindsay). I decided to watch the first few minutes to see what it was like and I wound up watching the whole thing. Now, I've watched a lot of programmes and films like this and at the end of them I always have a slightly empty feeling, like I haven't quite 'got it'. These sorts of things generally revolve around the upper middle class, whom I have very little in common with and mostly because that's the world the author comes from, and is generally filled with lots of symbolism which I never fully understand. I can appreciate it from an artistic perspective. It was beautifully filmed, the script was excellent and the acting was spot on. It just reached a point towards the end where I didn't fully understand what was happening and that somehow I was being left behind. I didn't 'get' the relationship between Gideon and his daughter, why he shut down completely when he was reunited with her, the significance of the flowers appearing everywhere. It's like reading a poem. I find poetry a beautiful art form but it's very rare that I understand what the poet is trying to say. Maybe it's a lacking in my education or maybe my mind just isn't the sort that can process that sort of thing. I don't know
Phew, that was a long ramble, wasn't it. Sorry, I just felt the need to express what I was feeling right at this moment. Now I'm going to go and watch some mindless BSG. LOL
Edit: On second thoughts, it's late. I think I'll just read some Da Vinci Code in bed instead. BSG tomorrow.
