I think I've sort of got used to being in small-ish fandoms. I mean the Merlin fandom is growing but I joined back in the beginning where there weren't many people writing fic, and I joined the Smallville fandom when most of the BNFs and such had already moved on to other things.

The Supernatural fandom scares me, and this is maybe why I never really got involved before. It's just so huge, and the sheer amount of wank that is generated is scary in itself.

I had a quiet little corner where I read a few fics but now I've made the mistake of joining comms and my flist has exploded to the point where I'm probably going to have to start actually filtering comms because I can't keep up with it all.

But at the same time, and I was talking about this with someone at the Merlin meetup yesterday, nothing tops that excited and gleeful feeling you get when you discover a new fandom. So, I like it but I kind of don't at the same time.

I'm going to write some more of my Colin/Bradley fic and try not to think about it I think

I might cross-post this to LJ later. Not sure yet.

I know what you mean. There's a lovely time when a fandom is new and there are just a few people about. There seems to be a lot more 'camaraderie' when things are just starting up. But of course as a fandom becomes more popular the sheer numbers seem to lead to the devloping of cliques and clans.
I hate any nastiness online, it's as if people forget that the whole thing is about having fun and laughing together. Real life throws us the crap, we come here to escape.
That's my little take on it anyway. Please don't let the 'wank' put you off being creative and having a good time. *fandom hugs*

I think SGA is the only fandom I got into once it was already really big... Oh, no, Highlander too, but I found both very intimidating. I kind of got over it and found my own niche in Highlander fandom, but I pretty quickly went back to just lurking in SGA. That's always felt very cliquey to me and not in a nice way. With DS9, SV and Merlin I got in pretty early and so have felt more squeeful and involved in the fandoms themselves as well as actually being fannish about the shows. And the Eroica fandom was always teeny tiny.

Frankly, SPN fandom scares the hell out of me and I'm kind of glad I have no fannish inclinations beyond watching and enjoying the show. Well, I'd sort of like to dip my toes into Dean/Castiel, but I have serious reservations.

OTOH: Yay! Bradley/Colin fic!

I think even Merlin is already too big for me. When I first got into it I thought I might try writing for it, but now so much has already been written that I don't think I have anything to say.

As for Supernatural, from what I can tell it has some very scary corners indeed. But, I am sure, lots and lots of good stuff to make up for that.

I only survive because I'm ruthless about cutting coms and people who are bringing the drama, I mostly stick to my fanfic and don't get worried about what else might be going on. (Looks like I have one new person I might have to cut :/ I HATE having to do that.) Stay the hell out of sam_dean whatever you do, there is nothing but trouble, and spoilers.

That said I've seen some of the stuff floating around from the latest con and it pissed me off for a bit, but I'm now skipping it and looking for the sane people's reports.

Well - If you a regular poster of fic, you cannot exsist without coming into the firing line from some wanker eventually. And the damned stuff is always hurtful.
Having friends who's opinion you know and trust is the best armour.

Ah, then I am indeed glad I've never ventured into SPN. SGA is way too much all about the BNFs for my taste and if SPN is at all similar it wouldn't be my cup of tea. I may give that comm a try, though.

I only know, spn must be troublesome coz of the incest!
what else could they have to wank about?!?!

:/ Yeah if it's anything like capslock_spn it takes a bit of getting used to. Once you grasp the humor it can be amusing but it is different and still sometimes over the line.

LOL.....there is more wank about Jared & Jensen than about the incest....way, WAY more.

aha, ok, LOL

so its actor related :D
I thought, it would be something about the show-related topics or so *g*
like angels having sex with humans and such ;D

And when I say "wank about Jensen & Jared" I mean entitled fans thinking that when they go to cons they're allowed exclusive and/or personal access to the actors. Its almost never about what the Js are doing so much as what the crazy fans have done this time.

Dean being a misogynist seems

er huch?
so fans are angry, coz the show is sexist or something?
I mean, Dean surely sleeps around a lot, but he is faithful to his brother, right XD
where is the problem?

Naw, we've just seemed to got the current corner market on crazy fangirls.

eeek no no and no.
I want my actors safely tucked away, and not coming anywhere near myself, much less would I subject myself to go near them ;D
I just want them as fantasy sex objects, gods, I don't really want to *know* any of them.
that's like hiring some gigolo, and then start falling in love or dreaming about picket fences... How awful!

Coming from HP Fandom to Superman was like an eye opening experience. Smaller fandoms are just better in a lot of ways. While I am glad of my HP experience - I made great friendships there (and it is always about more than the fandom regarding the friendships) the Superman movie fandom is so much smaller that we're almost like a family - and even though the Smallville fandom is much bigger I mostly hang out in my little corner and it feels much more ... *Ponders the right world*) ... homey than the HP fandom ever did.

I think it's hit and miss though - in a large fandom you have a huge amount of fics you can read with just about any sort of pairing yet it can be impersonal until you jump into it. (And with larger fandoms jumping in can be intimidating.) In smaller fandoms there's usually not nearly as much to choose from.
