Highlander is on TV. It's much worse than I remember it being *is amused*

[livejournal.com profile] yavannauk does the series have really poor Scottish accents and really badly choreographed fight sequences?

Haha I'm watching it too :p I'd forgotten how bad the accents were...

Hee. I saw that it was on tonight when I was browsing through the tv guide thingy on the digibox. It always amuses me how dodgy they sound. ^^

Hehe! It was rather funny. Sadly I couldn't bring myself to watch it all

I don't think I've ever seen it to the end though - for some reason I can't face it :p

I used to love it when I was a teenager. It hasn't aged well.

Oh, how nice it would be if a channel around here (in the United States) actually showed the series in reruns again. I think the Sci-Fi Channel managed to show a section of season 1 during a six hour block a few months back--out of order. And four years ago, Spike TV quit showing it, I believe.

I've never seen any of the series. [livejournal.com profile] yavannauk is giving me an introductory session next weekend

Honestly, I don't think the show really started getting good until Methos came along. What episode/season are you starting with? Because if you start with season 1, it's awful.

Hehe! Well, I think it's mostly an introductory session to Methos actually *g*

Good, then you'll start in a great spot.

Oh! Just remembered that Anthony Stewart Head is in one episode of season 1--a particularly awful episode. And in season 6, if you can survive the episode, there's one with Alexis Denisof. I didn't recognize him at first because he had longish hair, an American accent, and he staggered around a lot.

You generally only get overt Scottish accents in the flashbacks, otherwise Adrian Paul is more mid-Atlantic. He's also a very talented swordsman/martial artist and there are some excellent fight sequences. Um, I think it's Duende that has some especially good ones.

I've never seen any of the pre-series films so I can't speak to the respective quality of them. I just know the two post-series films were utter crap that IMO devalued the really rather good ending they gave the series.

*gets off soapbox*

Yep, that's the plan. I may be a little biased. *g* Not that there weren't some good episodes in the first couple of seasons, but a touch of Methos makes everything better! (And please to not be looking at the highly spoilery icon above! *koff*)

Adrian Paul's Scottish accent is pretty bloody awful (as is his ponytail), but the fight scenes weren't all that bad - as far as I remember, once I had it on tape I usually fast-forwarded through them, and also through the Quickenings. The shagging-the-female-guest-star-of-the-week thing got old pretty fast, too. However, all was forgiven in series 3, when Methos, the oldest (and most sarcastic) Immortal came on the scene.

Crap accents, awful wigs, some dire acting in places (Stan K I'm looking at you), BUT, it's fun. And actually the fight scenes are generally great for the time (and some for now *g*). It's subtexty as hell as soon as Methos show up, and really, it's generally just a fun enjoyable show. But for the love of little green apples, don't bother with the rest of the films. Even the actors have disowned and retconned them *g*.

OH, DUNCAN MACLEOD. How I miss watching you flip your ponytail around during your sweaty, shirtless Katana practice. (Why yes, I watched this show for the superb acting and plot...*looks shifty*)

And then there was Methos, and then I actually *did* watch it for the acting and plots (and also because Methos is very pretty).

I will admit, my favorite was....um, Richie.

WHAT? I WAS A TEENAGER. HE WAS THE "YOUNGEST" ONE ON THE SHOW. AND I HAVE A WEAKNESS FOR MOTORCYCLES. SO SUE ME.

And then my second favorite was Duncan, because I'm horribly, horribly shallow.

But Methos was by far my favorite character. I just...was mostly there for the pretty men with swords and motorcycles.

The Highlander. When I'm in need of a testosterone fix ... or a dose of Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes) who became a regular from the first episode of Series 2. I loved it that they actually used quite a bit of Jim's own music (him being a rather awesome blues singer and song writer).
