There is a lot of squee about Law and Order UK on my flist. I thought it was a bit pants personally, but Jamie did look very pretty. His accent though...

And I'd rather Freema had stayed in Torchwood ;)

It wasn't anything amazing in my opinion.

Or maybe Jamie should have gone to Torchwood?

Heheh! I liked his accent - somehow it made him even hotter when he was being a bit rough rather than all posh like he really is.

I thought it was OK, good enough to watch again next week.

It was all right - which is about the same as anyone can say about the original. Some of the procedure was decidedly dodgy, but no-one watches these things as a police instructional video. At least, I hope they don't.

What was wrong with Jamie Bamber's accent?

I think it really mirrored the original series but then the scripts have been chosen from there due to some contractural business so a slight recycled quality perhaps?

Still any procedural has to be better than something like C.S.I. Miami which is pure fantasy. I still watch though.

I've always enjoyed the Law & Order series for its downbeatness and I never feel that I have to watch the episodes in any kind of order so dip in if and when I see its on and in the mood. Quite different to other series where there is often an arc for character development or plot bits but I understand that is deliberate on the part of the producers.

It took me a few minutes to get used to Bamber's accent. i think because my only other experience of him is in BSG where he's using an American accent. Still I think his natural British accent isn't quite so broad. It was uneven last night so sometimes very East End and then less so.

Ah the CSIs...I am halfway through preparing a rant because I saw yet another thread on IMDb where people think it's accurate. *shudders* I still watch NY, and I know nothing about the procedural aspects (and even less about the US) but scientist here, and what I *know* they get abysmally wrong, so god knows what they do to the more technical stuff.

Although - can a trial be aborted? The word seemed wrong somehow. But I could be wrong.

Maybe Bamber was confused that he didn't have to do the US accent on camera? Because most of the time he sounded like he did at C14...

Oops, long comment, sorry for butting in!

I'd already butted in :)

No, the correct term is 'aborted' - we are probably more used to hearing the term mistrial because of American cop shows.

"What is a "mistrial"?

If the jury hangs or cannot reach a verdict, the judge declares a mistrial. If there was some other procedural mis-step or misconduct within the process, the judge can declare a mistrial. It means the trial is aborted, and depending on the circumstances, it's either over or they have to do the trial again.
(from USA site).

What amuses me about CSI: Miami is that Horatio just has to give his stare to hardened criminals and they confess to murder, drug running and the like. No lawyer is ever called. Plus why would a CSI be doing those kind of interviews anyway?

Law and Order in all its incarnations tries to be a little more based on procedure, which is long and rather boring. There was a Jerry Bruckheimer (he of CSI) one called 'Close to Home' that tanked after a few seasons rather than ran and ran and I think that was because it was more staid and the legal issues were tackled more realistically.

As for the forensics both Patricia Scarpetta and Kathy Reichs both actual forensic profesionals have been mentioning in their recent novels the ideas that people now have because of the TV shows about crime scene investigation being so off the mark.

Ah, see, you learn something new everyday! Though I feel a little bad at being caught out by the US shows. *fails*

NOT DAVID CARUSO!! Dear god, anything but David Caruso. I can't stand him on screen, I really can't. But that bugs me too...scientists wouldn't be doing that. Giving evidence in court, yes, they can and do, but interrogations? There are people all qualified to do that.

I've read some Kathy Reich, and she does know her stuff, which is fun, but with my reading I prefer more fantasy type things. (If I want to read sciencey things, I'll read a textbook or journal, ya know?)

But CSI is bad. BAD. Law and Order UK got it's science right. I approved. (Not that there was much in it but still...)
