What is this Twilight thing people keep talking about on my flist? All I've been able to determine is that the latest book is crap and that there is going to be a TV show (which also looks crap)

What's all the fuss about?

The big fuss is there is a big fuss. I get the distinct impression that someone is trying to catch Harry Potter's coattails. And I'm reading the book. So, er, yeah.

it's a book series that isn't crap, thank you very much, and it has a movie coming out, not a show.

It is pretty much what I expected given the subject matter, in essence, teenage vampires (heh.) The main character is sometimes funny and sometimes unintentionally hilarious in that "OMG, high school!" sort of way.
I like it so far (only ~100 pages into the first book,) but I haven't found anything to rave about to my friends, yet.

Also: Wet!Clark for the distraction WIN.

And: I've sniffed out the possibility of vampire/werewolf slash which in my depraved brain is sufficient motivation for many things.

I didn't know what it was either so I just spent an enjoyable couple of hours reading snarky recaps about it here (http://cleolinda.livejournal.com/2008/08/02/). It's of all the books, takes great pleasure in the cracktasticness of the books, and has the best possible term for a werewolf turning into a wolf: Fursploded. Seriously, I laughed so hard at that.

It's supposedly the next "Harry Potter" as far as being a wonderful teen/young adult book.
I just started it yesterday so will let you know if it's any good or not! :)

You are very welcome to my copy of the first book if you want it. Good god. There is really only one noteworthy thing about the series: it gave us sparkly vampires. No, truly. That's the real reason they avoid the sun, you know.

I just started the first book and there is a 'Buffy'-like appeal to it - 16 year old high school student and a doomed love affair between her and a vampire.

The last book has generated a lot of fandom responses with some hating it.

I has become a phenomena on its own or with clever work by the publisher a la the Potter books with fans parting and queing at midnight for the first sales.

OMG dude, it's SO bad. Epic bad. I read it mostly to be able to keep up with the wank, but I weep for the teenage girls who think Edward is a romantic hero.

And as for the HP comparison - it's popular, sure, but it doesn't have nearly as universal an appeal. Plus, Stephenie Meyers makes JKR look like Shakespeare.

It can't really be the next Harry Potter as 'Breaking Dawn' was the last (I think - am just on Book 1).

However, it has generated media buzz and had things happen like embargos and midnight openings for first sales and parties and the like. Not just in the USA but in the UK too.

I haven't read it, but the reviews I read said it was typical mormon chastity and damsel in distress, where she is very passive--compared to Buffy who's of course the person everyone keeps comparing her to.

I know. I'm inundated with Twilight icons everywhere. As you've already been told, a book series about a teenage vampire boy who is about near perfect as far as I can tell and a teenage girl. Unrequited love and all that. And his family don't eat people or something? And the movie might be ok. I saw the Trailer before Indiana and it wasn't bad. Of course this is all just what I've read mainly, since I hadn't heard of any of it until about a week ago.

It's a series of books (the latest one just came out) and an upcoming movie . No tv series... yet...

Have you read the Potter books? Remember the Harry/Ginny angsty romance?
Replace Harry with a sparkling vampire, and Ginny with a normal girl, cut off Voldemort and anything that looks like plot and decorate everything with sparkles.

That basically is the Twilight series. And, I only read the first book... well, parts of it... I had to giggle all the time (in the way you giggle about bad fanfic) and when I didn't giggle I skipped a few chapters, becasue they were so boring and so crappy - if I've had read further, I likely would have killed myself by laughing.

The twilight thing is because the books are awesome, way better then harry potter.

The latest book is suppose to be awesome, but everyone has their own opition so im not really going to say anything about because i haven't gotten to read it, so really i can't say anything about it.

There isn't going to be a show about it, just a movie based on the first book.

Its AWESOME thats why its a big thing.

I've read the first two. I didn't think Twilight was a great work of literature, but I admit, I kinda enjoyed it. Kind of a light read with angst that didn't make me go angsty. I won't say it's the usual high school drama because most books about teenage girls make me realize why I hated being a teenage girl.

The vampires? They made me roll my eyes. I think of the 'romantic' lead as Captain Cardboard. Some of the other characters were interesting. Since I did get annoyed over the girl ignoring her best guy friend in favor of Captain Cardboard, it must have been a decent book. If I didn't like the characters, I wouldn't care who ended up with the girl.

I'm not going to runa round in a Prom dress and sigh over Edward though. LOL

Oh, yes, I agree!

I badly wanted to slash Jean-Claude and Richard in the Anita Blake series but Richard was just too bloody annoying. LOL!

Read it before you can say anything about it.
