Greg is running a one-off Torchwood roleplaying game and he's asked me to join in. Now I need to come up with an original character. It can be anyone/anything from the past, present or future

So far two of the other gamers have picked a girl who was kidnapped as a child and brainwashed (think River from Firefly) and a Victorian era hunter.

Anyone from the past, present, or future? I'd pick Spartacus. Just so that I could say "I'm Spartacus", and everyone else would say "No, I'm Spartacus", and I'd just look at them blankly and wonder why they were saying it.

In my experience, the best way to come up with a character is to start from a very simple concept...like 'hacker', 'bag lady', 'tattoo artist' or whatever, and then ask yourself lots of questions about the character & see what comes out of your brain.

Male/female?
Age?
Era/time period?
Job?
Hobbies?
Family/friends?
Appearance?
Residence?
Married/relationships?
Experience with the supernatural?
Character traits? (shy, brave, nervous, bubbly, pessimistic, flirtatious etc)

& so on...

Jot down everything that comes to mind & by the time you're done you should have a pretty good idea of what your character is like :-)

Not a problem! I know what it's like to just draw a complete blank when someone says 'come up with a character' and doesn't give you much to go on :-)

The '20 questions' approach above tends to help get the creative juices flowing...

I actually help admin a Harry Potter-esque (non-canon, etc)RPG, www.dendronexordium.net. I can tell you, aftering doing bios for months, what sort of character you shouldn't do because it's overdone to death:

Runaways
Adoptees
Mysterious past
Orphans
Orphans caused by brutally horrible parental death
Abuse victims
Rape victims
Evil twins
People want to kill you
From some swanky-sounding country you know absolutely nothing about (seriously, this girl was a "modern Greek" who worshipped ancient gods)
PEOPLE WANT TO KILL YOU ALL THE FREAKING TIME
