On writing
Mar. 5th, 2010 04:17 pmThanks to everyone who took the time to answer my writing question yesterday. It was really interesting to read what you all had to say on the subject.
There's no right or wrong answer btw. We're all different, and your comments just served to highlight that fact.
For my own part, and I said this to some of you in the comments, the enjoyment I get is out of the actual process of writing. Nothing beats the feeling of having a story that's guided by your characters. To me that's when you know you're doing it right.
What I find frustrating is the awareness of my own limitations. I know that no matter how long I slave over a fic it's never going to be of the quality of some of my favourite writers because I just don't possess the skill. It's like, I know what an apple tastes like, but if you asked me to put it into words I could come up with a few adjectives but I couldn't come up with some of the beautiful imagery that a more skilled writer than I could.
That doesn't mean I don't strive to improve. I do. All the time. But there's only so far I can get on my own merits. Beyond that I'd need some sort of tutor I think. I don't know.
But, hey, so long as I enjoy doing it, even if I'm never 100% satisfied with the end result, that's what matters, right?
