Help please

So, here's the thing. nessaancalime has bribed talked me into writing my first Sparrington fic based on this dream. It's good really, I've been wanting to write one for ages even though I'm terrified because it's a new fandom.

Anyway, the problem is I have NO idea how to get James into the state of mind and situation where he wants to or has to throw himself into the sea. I was trying to think of reasons to get him fired since I think that's probably the worst thing that could happen to him. However, as jacqui_hw pointed out, only the Govenor has the authority to fire the most high ranking naval officer in Port Royal. Then I thought about killing someone James cares about, but aside from Jack (which obviously won't work) I can't think of anyone else who's death would drive him to suicide.

Then of course I was dabbling with the idea of having pirates or someone board his ship and him bargaining with the lives of his crew by offering to sacrifice himself in exchange for them being spared. Problem with that is how does Jack happen to be there and to save him without getting killed himself

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Just have to wait

I've written to the Council about what happened on Monday so I just have to wait to hear back from them now. I don't hold out a lot of hope of them actually doing anything but I figure I should at least try
