...that was kind of awesome!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT! Lex actually killed Lionel! I mean we all hoped it would happen but I really though the writers weren't going to do it
Lionel falling to his death in the crucifixion pose was so unneccesary though. Urgh!
You guys weren't kidding when you talked about Tom and Michael's performances in this episode. The boys were really on their game for this!
I can't bring myself to be sad about Lionel's death. His redemption was so sloppily written that I never bought it. To me he is still the evil fucker who tortured Lex emotionally and physically for most of his life. Lex's motives for killing Lionel may have been a bit twisted but did you see how broken he was in that scene? Tears in his eyes as he gives his father one last chance to make things right.
Hell, I'D have killed Lionel after all that. There's only so much a person can take.
And I have to say I laughed when Lex had Gina killed. I knew it was coming because she kept touching him. Lex Luthor does not like to be touched! Apart from by Clark ;) Anyway, of course she died just after trying to tell him Clark's secret. Lex's timing always sucks!
Ok, let's move onto THAT scene. I had it so built up in my head that it was kind of a relief to see the actual thing. LOL. Yes, Clark accused Lex of being delusional when he mentioned aliens and that's bad but really I think both the boys were hurting so bad in this scene that they weren't really thinking about what they were saying. They just wanted to hurt each other and it worked.
I also can't be annoyed at Clark's treatment of Lionel. It's Clark's character to think the best of people and see any hope of redemption in them. He didn't have to cope with the years of abuse like Lex did. Clark grew up in a loving family with no notion of having a father who hated you. It gives me hope that if Lex were to work at it (not that he will, but for fanfic purposes) that Clark could forgive him too in the end.
And didn't the boys look pretty in the funeral scene?
Ok, people talk to me about it!

I said almost the same thing in my review. It broke my heart! And when Lionel started in on the lie about Lex being the Traveler, you could just see the resignation, and then the resolve, on Lex's face. He really did believe he had no other choice, just as he said to little Lex later. And when he hurled Lionel from the window with that decisively sharp thrust, I just gasped, although I had seen the promo countless times by then. It just meant so much more when you saw what led up to it. And all that, just in the first few minutes! Wow.
I also think Lionel was bad to the end. Although I do believe he took some actions to protect Clark, they were always in his own self interest as well. I think his redemption was all in his own twisted mind, and we never did get verification of it from any other source, did we? I do think Jor-El's possession of his body did change him, but not enough to allow him to conquer his dark side.
My take on the mansion scene was also the same as yours. Two boys lashing out in pain. It made me cringe to hear Clark say those things, but it was a glorious scene all the same. God they're good together, aren't they?
I don't want to believe Lex had Gina killed, but I can see what you're saying. I was yelling at my screen, "Stop touching him! Can't you see it's making him uncomfortable?!" LOL! And she knew way too much.
I'm so glad you liked it! *claps hands*

Sv really loves its symbolism. Even if it has nothing to do with the character *facepalms*

I agree. They just kept talking and making everything worse without getting anywhere. It was so hard to watch!

Ah, but he DID watch that memory of little Lex being thrown around between his parents. He DID watch Lionel frying Lex's brain even when the doctor was telling him the machine wasn't working right. Etcetc, I think Clark should have known better ):

He'll apologise later...in my head at least...and then they'll have makeup sex

Honestly, I think Lionel took that pose on purpose because he thinks he's greater than Jesus, died for all of us blah blah. Narcissist to the end, the jackass. He knew he might die in this, and since he had that scare in S3 he's been making plans for the afterlife. Won't he be surprised? Either he's going to burn in a hell of his own making or be reincarnated as a mollusk.
It's Clark's character to think the best of people and see any hope of redemption in them.
Unless your name is Lex, in which case, it's usually accuse first and get evidence later. He's going to have to reverse that trend (It's how Lois does her investigating, too. Oops!) if he wants to ever put Lex behind bars.
The thing is, Clark has now been coping with the abuse that Jor-El gives him and *I* believe, the emotional abuse that Jonathan unintentionally imposed on him. I'm not saying that Jonathan was an unequivocally horrible father, but he DID undercut Clark's confidence and self-sufficiency a number of times, culminating in Red when Jonathan tells him that it's "his choice." And Clark's choice MUST be what Jonathan wants him to do, otherwise he's bitchy and unsupportive. Yikes!
YES THEY LOOKED PRITTY IN THE FUNERAL SCENE! I wonder what Lex was thinking there:
1) Ha! Superman, you have no evidence. A jury will never convict me!
2) Free at last! Free at last! MWA HAHAHA!!
3) Oh, Clark, you jackass. I've freed us both. He'll never be able to treat you like his son again. If only you understood this is the only way. I'll save us all, even if you hate me.

I would never depreciate anyone elses mental state based on their reaction to an episode. I hated Fracture where most people loved it, but no one criticised me for my opinion. That's what makes my flist so awesome

I think both the boys were hurting so bad in this scene that they weren't really thinking about what they were saying. They just wanted to hurt each other and it worked.
That is *such* a great interpretation of it. That's the scene that made me angry, because I just could not get over Clark saying that if Lex had tried harder, Lionel would have been proud and loved him.
I also think that no matter who Clex is talking about, they're actually talking about each other. It's in everything they do. Lex says that a billionaire shouldn't want anything to do with a farm boy; Clark retorts that if Lex would have tried harder, it would have been different.
It gives me hope that if Lex were to work at it (not that he will, but for fanfic purposes) that Clark could forgive him too in the end.
That, too, is a great interpretation. I really hope you're right. I really, really do, but I just can't see it in Clark anymore. I liked "Descent" a lot, but it left me feeling so hopeless where Clex is concerned.
Oh well. Fanfic! :D
