LJ question

Can anyone explain why LJ sometimes squishes long threads so that they become unreadable like this. Is there any way to change the layout so it's in a straight list or something instead of indenting each time?

Threads just collapse when they get too long. Always been that way though they look messier on the new layouts than on traditional layout.
