LJ question

Can anyone explain why LJ sometimes squishes long threads so that they become unreadable like this. Is there any way to change the layout so it's in a straight list or something instead of indenting each time?

That's really odd. But LJ confuses me. I still can't figure out how to post links to past chapters on posts or customise my layout.
