This has been a fun read! I always love hearing about how others have experienced fandom and how it influenced their lives. Like you, I made my first ever trip abroad to visit a fan friend (My mum: 'But you have never met this person! How can you just visit her for two weeks?') and I can honestly say that I wouldn't be in the job I'm in now if it hadn't been for fandom. I also wouldn't have all my various computer skills.

I was very fond of Smallville's first 3 seasons but once it became clear that Clark was never going to tell Lex, I dropped out. Followed Supernatural for 2 seasons but it got weirdly to... Christian for me. My niece, however, got into it later and was into Destiel.
